In Bakersfield California, a little white dog named Jack is alive and well thanks to the actions of local firefighters and Girl Scouts. The Bakersfield Fire Department posted a video of the remarkable rescue on Facebook. When firefighters arrived, Jack's owners had evacuated, but Jack was still stuck inside. Firefighters managed to retrieve Jack, but he was suffering from severe smoke inhalation and was in bad shape.
"BFD Firefighters rescued a pet canine from the earlier 4627 Quarter Ave residential structure fire today. The small breed dog was pulled from the interior unresponsive, with semi-agonal respirations, and as its concerned owner looked on, BFD Firefighters revived the pet using a specialized animal oxygen mask and high flow oxygen," reads the Facebook caption posted with the video shown above.
Jack's incredible rescue was captured by KGET 17 News journalist Chuck Dennis. Battalion Chief John Frando told KGET 17 News that they were able to save Jack thanks to donated pet oxygen masks.
"We did pull the dog to the outside, he actually appeared very lifeless," Frando said. "We administered oxygen via a pet O2 mask that was generously donated by a couple of Girl Scouts just last year."
After the firefighters revived Jack, they transported him to Bakersfield Veterinary Hospital. In a Facebook post, BFD posted an update about the status of Jack.
"BFD Firefighters are pleased to announce that our recently rescued patient, 'Jack' has significantly improved. Jack spent the night receiving extensive oxygen therapy and suffered some respiratory tract injuries and burns to his feet, but is doing well now under a veterinarian's care. Jack was reunited with his owners today and had a special visitor, BFD Fire Engineer Matt Smith (FS 1 C), who carried the canine from his burning home," the Facebook post read.
Jack was saved thanks to the actions of not only the firefighters but also the actions of the Girl Scouts, who donated the equipment that essentially aided in bringing Jack back to life.
$50,000 worth of damage was reportedly done to the home. Arson investigators are still looking into what caused the fire.
