Puppy Abandoned In Airport Bathroom With Heartbreaking Note

A helpless 3-month-old puppy was found abandoned in a Las Vegas airport bathroom over the weekend with a devastating note from the puppy's owner. The handwritten note explained why the owner decided to leave the little Chihuahua behind.

"Hi! I’m Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight," the note read. "She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart, but she has no other option. My ex-boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy sooo much – please love and take care of him." 

After sweet little Chewy was discovered, he was taken to a local Las Vegas dog rescue called Connor & Millie’s Dog Rescue.  

The rescue has been giving updates on Chewy. So far, there's already lots of requests to adopt the sweet little dog, who seems to be healthy and doing well.

"There has been tremendous interest in little Chewy !!! We are compiling all the interest forms and will be going through them all. CMDR would like to say thank you for all the offers of a loving home," the rescue wrote in a Facebook post. "However, there is but 1 Chewy and he can go but to 1 home. Please consider the hundreds if not thousands of 'Chewys' loaded with love that are desperately seeking homes in shelters which are at max capacity, rescues are full! Please consider adopting another wonderful companion in his honor!" 

Connor & Millie's Dog Rescue has put a hold for now on incoming applications to adopt Chewy as there have already been so many applications submitted to adopt the pup. But, the rescue encourages those touched by Chewy's story to "save another life just like him" in Chewy's honor. 

Chewy's story highlights the sad effects domestic violence can have on pets. When victims of domestic abuse make the move to escape their abusers, they may feel they are left without any options when it comes to taking their pets with them. But, there are options out there according to Lori Nelson, who works for Noah's Animal House in Las Vegas, a boarding facility on the grounds of the largest women and children's shelter in Nevada that keeps and cares for pets of abuse victims till their owners are able to take care of them. 

"There’s absolutely an option out there," Nelson insists. "The animal is equally a member of the family as anyone else and it's vital that when you're leaving a domestic violence situation that your pet can come with you," said Nelson.

"This one really got to me. You could tell by the way the note was written that the woman was in dire stress and she didn't want to give him up and she couldn't take him with her," Darlene Blair from Connor & Milie's Dog Rescue told NEWS3LV. "I know it's hard when you're in that situation to trust someone but there are good people out there – and if you're in that situation and you need help to take your dog with you try not to be too afraid to ask for help." 

While Chewy's owner may have felt distressed and desperate when she left Chewy at the airport bathroom, it's important to remember that pets are members of the family too. And it's quite fortunate that Chewy was discovered by a decent human being rather quickly, but that is not always the case. You don't know when or who could pick up a pet left to fend for itself.
