Dog Who Lost Her Babies Becomes Surrogate Mom To Orphan Pups

When sweet dog Blossom lost two of her three babies within only a few days of them being born earlier this month, she was devastated. The dog fervently searched the house for her missing pups. The pups likely died due to infections from Blossom's health problems. The dog was given up to a busy Texas shelter by her owners in May and was pregnant at the time with heartworm.

Just a day or so after the tragedy, Blossom's foster mom Maggie Escriva, who is also the intake coordinator for Westie & Scottie Rescue Houston, heard about a litter of eight puppies that were thrown out of a moving car.

Six of the very young puppies survived, none of whose eyes are even open yet. "It was obvious they needed a mom," Escriva told The Dodo

Though Escriva was worried as to how Blossom or her own pup Princess Buttercup would react to new puppies, she figured it was worth a try.

A week after Blossom was met with six orphan puppies, she is feeding the puppies as often as they wish and she is very protective of all seven–the six orphans and her own.

In a few months time, the puppies (all seven) will be up for adoption. And in September is when sweet and heroic Blossom will be up for adoption as that should account for her physical and emotional recovery.

"I find it very inspiring to see a beautiful creature like Blossom suffer such a heartbreaking loss and turn her full attention to caring for needy puppies, saving their lives. Blossom is teaching us that the best way to heal is to help others," Escriva told The Dodo.
