Police Officers Enter Burning Building To Rescue Dog
Smokey the dog was found stuck in a burning building in Atlanta, Georgia by two police officers, who promptly worked to rescue the dog and save his life.
According to 11Alive.com and People, Officers Robert Winkler and Austin Denninger of the Atlanta Police Department responded to a call in regards to a fire at an abandoned apartment building. They entered the burning building to make sure no one was stuck inside. That's when they discovered a dog in dire need of help.
"At first I didn't realize what it was, but then I saw it was a dog," Winkler told 11Alive.com. "I just saw this one little paw, this kick. And I thought, 'Oh no, that's not good.'"
The remarkable rescue was caught on camera via the brave officers' bodycams. In the footage shown above, Winkler can be seen grabbing the dog by the collar and picking Smokey up in his arms.
The poor dog was unconscious, but after several minutes of attention from the two officers, the dog started to regain consciousness.
"When it finally started to come to and it caught its breath, it was breathtaking for me. As an officer, it's our job, and I think that any officer would do the same thing." Denninger said.
After making sure the dog was okay and well, the officers started to look for Smokey's owner. A local resident in the area told the officers that he had seen the dog being pushed in a stroller by a man who seemed to take good care of the dog and always stayed by his side.
Unfortunately, officers Robert Winkler and Austin Denninger were unable to find the man or any other leads to connect them to Smokey's owner. For the time being, Smokey is at Fulton County Animal Control waiting for a fresh start with a new forever family.
"People do heroic things, awesome things all the time, and to see this big of a reaction was really cool. It’s having the worst day of its life and if you can do something to negate that bad ending, you gotta do it. If I could save goldfish, I would," Winkler said in regards to the positive reaction surrounding the life-saving heroics of he and his fellow officer.
