Florida Police Smash Window To Rescue Suffering Dog From Hot Car

This summer, it's important to remember that dogs should not be kept inside hot cars. When the temperature outside is warm, the temperature inside the car is even warmer. Dog owners may think that they will only be inside a store for a few moments so it's okay to leave their dog in the parked car. But, this is far from the case!

Every year, hundreds of dogs die from heat exhaustion, because they are left in hot cars. When the temperature outside is 78 degrees, the temperature inside the car can reach anywhere from 100 to 120 degrees in a matter of minutes and so on! Even if the windows are left cracked open, dogs CANNOT cool themselves down in the scorching hot car.

It takes minutes for a hot car to turn into a deathtrap and this is something that a concerned passerby in Boynton Beach, Florida was well aware of when they alerted police to a dog locked in a hot car.

The temperature outside was a whopping 91 degrees, which meant that the temperature inside the car was at least 100 degrees. The poor pit bull trapped inside was panting heavily and clearly in need of help.

When the Boynton Beach Police Department arrived on the scene, several officers searched the area for the dog's owner. But, after 15 minutes and no owner in sight, they knew they had to take action. An officer broke through the glass and reached inside to unlock the door and rescue the struggling pup. 

The owner of the dog was cited and scolded for leaving their dog in the car. The police warned the owner that if the onlooker didn't contact police, the situation could have been deadly. 

The Boynton Beach Police Department posted a warning on their Facebook Page about leaving dogs in unattended cars and the consequences: 

"Repeat after us...it is never OK to leave your pet in an unattended vehicle. It is illegal and if you do it in the City of Boynton Beach, you are going to be cited for it - at a minimum."

They also left some harsh but true advice regarding the matter that all pet owners should take into consideration:

"Our advice, stop being lazy (harsh, yes, but true). Bring your pet home and then go back out to run whatever errands you need to do."  

It's just not worth it! Please don't leave your dog in an unattended vehicle. It doesn't matter if you think you will be gone for five minutes – those five minutes could be deadly. Keep your pups safe by leaving them home instead.
